2008-09 FIS Aerial Freestyle World Cup

​Maria Zhang ranked 4th on her first World Cup

For the first time in Hong Kong skiing history, SAHK introduced Ms. Maria Zhang not only to compete for HK in the 2009 World Cup Competition in Changchun, and to came in # 4th ( almost a medal position ) among the world's best Freestyle skiers was quite a accomplishment for HK skiing. The SAHK team with our only Freestyle skier arrived Changchun on Dec 15thfor the FIS Freestyle World Cup.

There are a total of 12 nations, including newcomers to the aerial FIS Freestyle World Cup from Kazakhstan Ski Federation and Ski Association of Hong Kong have gathered in Changchun, Jilin Province (CHN) to test the renovated and floodlit aerial site at the newly-renamed resort of Adventure Mountain. Defending aerial champions Jacqui Cooper (AUS) and Steve Omischl (CAN) are back to defend their yellow leaders bibs also after the first two competitions of the season to be held on Friday and Saturday. The host nation, China, has also sent out their bests to compete on home snow.

During the ladies' event (Feb. 19), initially light then heavy snow started to fall and the winds pick up which delayed the training and slowed down the running of the competition. The jury decided to reduce the degree of difficult (DD) of competition to ensure that competition could be safely completed. In her 1st World Cup, Hong Kong skier’s Maria Zhang, with the score of 88.2 on her first jump, was ranked 4th and very nearly on the podium.

Furthermore, Mr. Edmond Yue (Chairman of SAHK) had a meeting with Mr. Hongguo Ren ,Vice President of Chinese Ski Association about developing skiing events and promotion for the skiing industries in the region , bringing in business opportunities and economic benefits for those well run organizing hosts for more future successful international ski events to China and Asia.

Looking forward to the season, Ski Association of Hong Kong (SAHK) intends to be bringing Ms. Maria Zhang and other ski qualifiers to the Winter University Game in Yabuli in China in Feb., and also the World Ski Championship for Freestyle competition in Inawashiro, Japan in March as well.
